Fire razes Cafe by the Ruins in Baguio City

THE iconic Cafe by the Ruins in Baguio City was gutted by a quick spreading blaze which torched the famous restaurant, Sunday noon, April 30.

Senior Fire Officer 3 Nelson Duagan Sr. of the Baguio City Fire Station said they received the call at 12 p.m., Sunday, and immediately responded despite being obstructed by the heavy traffic.

"When we responded, it was rush hour, there is a delay because of the traffic but we still arrived at the right time,” Duagan said.

The fire department is a few meters from the hometown hangout, which has become spot for artists, writers, poets, foodies, lawyers, politicians, and tourists.

Duagan said upon arrival at the scene, the fire was already big and consuming the roof of the structure made from cogon.

The BCFS team was augmented by Sunshine Fire volunteers, Baguio Water District (BWD) and workers from the nearby Eurotel Hotel.

Duagan said quick action of responding firemen and volunteers prevented the possible spread of fire to other structures.

Fire out was declared at 12:20 p.m.

Cafe co-owner Feliz Perez said an initial damage of P1.5 million is estimated for the damaged structure including equipment.

In a statement the management of the Cafe said “We'd like to update everyone that our staff and guests are safe and we thank you all for the concern. We are handling this emergency as diligently and efficiently as we can.”

The management added there is an ongoing investigation as they thanked everyone for the concern and support.

Eurotel has also reported at least four air conditioning machines damaged.

The BFP has yet to determine the cause of the mid-day fire.
