Fishkill alarms Masantoleños anew

RESIDENTS of Masantol town were alarmed again after tons of fish were seen floating along the portion of the Pampanga River on Wednesday morning.

Coastal Emergency Officer Marcelo "Bajun" Lacap said that they first noticed the water of Pampanga River turned brown on Tuesday afternoon.

The next morning, dead fish, shrimps, crabs and other water creatures were already seen floating along the river, he added.

Lacap said residents and fishermen in the area are suspecting that chemical discharges from an alcohol fermentation plant located in Barangay Sulipan in adjacent Apalit town caused the alleged fish kill.

"Wala kaming ibang hinala kundi ang palagiang pagtatapon ng chemical waste ng planta sa ilog," he said.

However, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources are yet to confirm if the incident is another fish kill incident.

The agency has reportedly sent a team to take water samples from the area.

It could be remembered that a fishkill incident also happened in this town in July 2015.

During that time, most of residents here, whose main livelihood is fishing, lost thousand of pesos in revenue due to the fish kill.

Lacap and residents of Masantol are now calling for the government to immediately provide intervention to avoid such an incident from happening again.
