For playing Dota at work, 2 City Hall workers lose job

TWO job-order workers in Mandaue City Hall lost their job Wednesday, July 6, after Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing saw a photo of the two playing an online game during office hours.

In the photo that Quisumbing posted in his Facebook account, the two male workers assigned at the City Planning and Development Office were seen playing Dota.

The mayor said the photo was sent by a City Hall employee to lawyer Mae Elaine Bathan, his chief of staff, who in turn sent the photo to him Wednesday morning.

u201cThis (photo of the) incident was taken a few days ago, but we have been receiving reports that this has been the practice of some employees,” said Quisumbing.

He said he learned that these employees even go to City Hall on weekends just to play Dota.

u201cWe know who they are. They just lost their job this morning,” Quisumbing said in a phone interview Wednesday.

He said there is no reason for the two employees to undergo due process because what they did as shown in the photo was “clear.”

The mayor also heard that there are other employees who play online games during office hours.

When asked if he will issue a memorandum to prohibit this, he said there is no need for it.

u201cI’m sure everybody knows that they should not be doing this,” Quisumbing said.

He, however, ordered the information technology department to immediately install firewall software in all the computers in City Hall to keep employees from downloading online games.

The mayor said that if the employees will do their job very well, the City will recognize them in the same way it recognized the traffic enforcer who continued to do his job amid heavy rains and flooding last Friday night.

But for those who don’t do their job properly, Quisumbing assured that they will be dealt with accordingly.
