Gaps no cause for alarm

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will inspect today the flyover on the Bantal (Banilad-Talamban) corridor.

This, after a picture showing the flyover with gaps was posted on Facebook.

However, Engr. Nonato Paylado, the chief of DPWH 7 planning and design division, said the gaps are intentionally placed in viaducts, flyovers and bridges to provide free movement, especially during earthquakes.

Without gaps, the structure can suffer heavy damage, he said.

Responsible posting

Paylado urged Facebook accounts owners to be responsible in posting picture of structures that may cause public alarm.

He said if the flyover gaps are photographed at close range, it will appear as big and alarming, when in reality, that is the same length of gaps provided for during the construction stage.

Paylado explained that gaps are not a cause for alarm if these are within the allowable limit.

He said the gaps in the viaduct of the Cebu South Coastal Road are within the allowable limit.

Despite this, though, Engr. Nicomedes Leonor, DPWH Cebu City Engineering District chief, immediately repaired the gaps to allay public fears.

A photo of the gaps had also been posted on Facebook.
