German wanted for serious assault arrested in Bohol

AGENTS of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) have arrested in Bohol a German national wanted in his country for attempted murder of a compatriot more than a decade ago.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente identified the fugitive as 52-year-old Lothar Gunther Bebenroth.

Bebenroth was reportedly apprehended last Wednesday, June 7, in Alburquerque, Bohol, by operatives from the BI's fugitive search unit (FSU).

Morente said that Bebenroth has to face trial of his cases of serious assault filed in a court in Postdam, Germany.

The said court earlier convicted Bebenroth and sentenced him to two years incarceration after he was found guilty of stabbing a fellow German in December 2006.

He spent more than four months in prison but was released on probation pending decision by the court on his appeal.

According to Morente, Bebenroth has been hiding in the Philippines since May 1, 2014.

Morente said Bebenroth will be deported and will be placed under the BI's blacklist to prevent him from re-entering the Philippines. (SunStar Philippines)
