‘Give importance to visual merchandising’

MICRO, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Negros Occidental are urged to give importance to visual merchandising as it impacts buyers’ impression of the products.

Rachel Nufable, chief trade and industry development specialist of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Negros Occidental, said it is important that enterprises know how to display their products well.

Nufable said one of the factors to be considered in visual merchandising is the “nature” of the products.

“If it’s furniture and handicrafts, does it need lighting? If they are displaying food items, where it should be placed? Are accessories needed for better presentation?” she said, adding that good visual merchandising is one strategy to attract potential buyers.

On Monday, 29 MSMEs, mostly in the food and gifts, decor and home-style (GDH) sectors, attended the training on visual merchandising.

They were trained by Doreen Alicia Gamboa-Peña, owner of Silay Export Inc., mainly on how to effectively display their products.

The one-day training initiated by DTI-Negros Occidental at Metro Inn Hotel in Bacolod City was also attended by 14 Negosyo Center business counselors in the province.

Nufable said it is important that business counselors should also be trained on visual merchandising as they are the ones assisting and giving advices to MSMEs.

“Poor visual merchandising may result to having bad image for the product and the store itself,” she said, emphasizing that potential buyers are normally passing by the establishments once “thus, proper and attractive displays are vital marketing strategies.”
