Groups provide aid to displaced families in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has expressed her gratitude to the scores of individuals and organizations who responded and pitched in to provide relief assistance to the some 4,000 families affected and displaced by storm surge and flash flood last week.

Flash flood and storm surge spawned by intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and the entry of Typhoon Paolo into the country inundated last week 23 of this city’s 98 villages.

Salazar, along with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and local officials, continue to coordinate and direct the distribution of relief efforts donated by various organizations to affected communities.

She also said that directives have been given to the CSWDO to provide assistance and other interventions to the families of the nine fatalities of the flooding incidents.

As of Friday, October 20, the tally of families affected has reached 4,385, which translates to 21,189 individuals, in 23 villages.

Total crop and fisheries damage is estimated around P155 million, with a total of 2,499 farmers affected. (SunStar Philippines)
