Guihulngan village chief killed, 2 others injured

A VILLAGE chief died while his two friends were wounded after they were shot by two unidentified men on a motorcycle at Barangay Tinayunan, Guihulngan City in Negros Oriental Thursday morning.

Police identified the fatality as Leodigario Beñero Jr., 40, of Barangay Hinakpan. He served as barangay chairman since 2008.

Injured were Allan de Asis, 43, and Angelito Villarmente, 49, both residents of Barangay Tinayunan.

Senior Inspector Elpidio Tago-an Jr., officer-in-charge of Guihulngan City Police Station, said that Beñero was drinking coffee with his six friends at Villarmente’s house around 9:30 a.m. when one of the assailants arrived and fired at them.

The gunman then escaped together with his lookout and driver.

Beñero succumbed to six gunshot wounds while De Asis and Villarmente suffered to minor gunshot wounds. Their three other friends were unharmed.

Police recovered from the scene six fired cartridges of .45 caliber pistol.

Tago-an said Beñero had no death threats, based on his family’s statement.
