Gun-for-hire, cop slain in Nueva Ecija

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga - A suspected gun-for-hire and a police officer were killed during a brief exchange of firefight at Barangay Calaba, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija, Friday.

Senior Superintendent Crizaldo Nieves, Nueva Ecija police provincial director, identified the alleged gun-for-hire as Bernardo Magno alias Boy and a resident of the said barangay.

Nieves said that a team of Provincial Public Safety Company officers led by Superintendent Ricardo Villanueva, while implementing a search warrant against Magno, was armed with long firearms tried to fight back with the operatives.

During a brief exchange of firefight, PO3 Jacinto Gregorio Jr., of the PPSC suffered gunshot wounds in the different parts of the body and died on the spot, Nieves said.

He said Magno also suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the body was declared dead on arrival in a nearby hospital.

Nieves said the incident occurred at 7:45 a.m., when the operatives were serving the search warrant against the suspect.

He said when the raiding team saw the suspect with a long firearm, they tried to convince him to surrender but instead fired towards them.

Nieves said that Magno also a drug pusher.

The wife of the suspect identified as Chona was unharmed.

Recovered from the crime scene were an M14 Rifle, an M16 Rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, a caliber .45 pistol and assorted live ammunitions and spent shells and drug paraphernalia.
