NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said on Monay that the rains since Sunday is good for the province’s agriculture.
This is the first time so far that rains came during Holy Week, he said.
"This is a blessing from the Lord. We should be thankful. This is good for sugarcane, rice and vegetables of our farmers," the governor said.
Isagani Republika of the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division said the rains is a result of an extended elongation of Tropical Depression Domeng that was downgraded into a low pressure area that made landfall in Samar Monday morning and was blown by a wind pattern of easterlies reaching out to central and northern Negros.
Republika said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecast the rain to last until April 18 as the province will experience this week partly cloudy to cloudy with rain showers or thunderstorms.
This is the first time so far that Negros will be rainy during the Holy Week, he confirmed.
Rice farmers dependent on the Bago River rrigation System and sugarcane farmers have reported that their plantations have already dried up before the rains came.
