House leader sees no reason to further delay barangay elections

HOUSE Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said he sees no reason to further postpone the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, which have been scheduled for May.

"Para sa akin I see no reason bakit i-postpone natin," he said in a press conference at the House of Representatives on Wednesday, February 14.

Alvarez, however, said he will welcome any decision from the majority on whether or not to continue with the elections.

"Sa'kin naman open naman ako diyan kung ano yung mapagkasunduan sa majority. Pero siyempre we still have to consider the Senate also kasi dadaan din sa kanila yan," he said.

Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali earlier filed a bill calling for another postponement of the forthcoming elections so that Congress could focus on amending the 1987 Constitution and complete it before the May 2019 midterm elections.

Umali filed the bill even after the Commission on Elections announced that they were 85-percent ready for the political exercise in May.

The barangay elections have twice been postponed - from October 2016 to October 2017 and then to May 2018.

If it is reset anew, it will be the third time that the Congress will have postponed the barangay polls. (SunStar Philippines)
