Iloilo City slaughterhouse goes on full swing operation

AFTER 11 months, Iloilo City’s slaughterhouse will finally operate full-swing starting on Monday, November 21, following the acquisition of two modern boilers amounting to P3.75 million.

Jose Ariel Castañeda, head of the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO), on Monday said they lose around P1.3 to P1.5 million a month due to lack of boilers. The operation of the slaughterhouse was then limited to only large cattle.

With the new boilers, they expect to accommodate 300 to 500 pig heads daily.

Castañeda said they will only be using one boiler at a time so they will have a spare unit while the other one is undergoing preventive maintenance. He also hoped the equipment would last long because these are brand new units.

The City Government has allotted P4 million for the acquisition of the equipment. The savings will be utilized to repair the boiler room, he said.

He added his office also eyed upgrading other equipment at the slaughterhouse and rationalize manpower by hiring technical persons who know how to do electrical and mechanical operations.

He cited the acquisition of the new boiler is also among the steps undertaken towards achieving a Double A certification from the National Meat Inspection Service.

The city slaughterhouse was originally designed for a Double A certification. For unknown reason, it did not materialize, said Castañeda who made all the trouble shooting of the problematic facility when he assumed as head of the LEEO. (PNA)
