Iloilo City speed limit takes effect on June 1

STARTING June 1, the City Government will strictly enforce the speed limit ordinance to avert vehicular accidents from happening in national roads in Iloilo.

City Administrator Hernando Galvez said they came to a consensus to implement Regulation Ordinance 2015-283 following this week’s consultation with the Iloilo City Police Office and the Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office.

The ordinance provides for the speed limits for all kinds of motor vehicles within the territorial jurisdiction of Iloilo City. It will cover national highways, like the Benigno Aquino Avenue or Diversion Road in Mandurriao District.

The maximum speed for passenger automobiles and motorcycles from corner of General Luna Street to Diversion Road and up to Barangay Ungka, Jaro district is 60 kilometers per hour (km/h). For trucks and buses, the speed limit is 50 km/h.

From Barangay Sambag, Jaro to Central Philippine University, Jaro Plaza; Iloilo Provincial Capitol and General Luna to Barangay Mohon in Arevalo district; JM Basa Street going to Fort San Pedro and within City Proper district, the speed limit for passenger automobiles and motorcycles is 40 km/h. For trucks and buses, the allowable speed is 30 km/h.

On the circumferential, radial and coastal roads, the speed limit for passenger automobiles and motorcycles is 60 km/h while for trucks and buses, the allowable is 40 km/h.

The admissible speed limit for passenger automobiles and motorcycles in all other highways, streets, or roads whether national or local within the territorial jurisdiction of Iloilo City is 30 km/p. For trucks and buses, the speed should be 20 km/p.

“A lot of accidents happened along our roads which resulted to damage to property or death. We look forward that with this implementation of the ordinance, we will lessen these accidents,” Galvez said.

City traffic aides will be using speed guns to determine the speed limit. City Hall has 10 speed guns.

Those who will be apprehended will be issued with a Temporary Operator’s Permit.

Violators will be penalized with P200 and or imprisonment of one day minimum to two months and maximum for the first offense.

For the second offense, a fine of P500 and or imprisonment of two months and one day minimum to four months maximum.

For the third offense, a penalty of P1.000 and or imprisonment of four months and one day minimum to six months maximum at court’s discretion. (PNA)
