Jaloop’z & Greasy Spoon

YOU’VE noticed that new hotel along J.P. Laurel Avenue, right? Yeps, the Tune Hotel. We also noticed the restaurant on its ground floor – Jaloop’z, it reads, and boasts of steaks.

Okay. If there’s steak, there must be some fish, as well. At least that is how it is in Davao City. No steak house can ever survive without serving fish. It should, too, because we had Miggy with us, a pescatarian (exclusively veggie and fish eater).

It was a small group – Deng, Miggy, and I.

Yes, they have steaks. But I wasn’t about ready to go for big slices, I’m fast gaining weight as it is, I can’t allow more prospective fats sneaking in and taking residence.

“Anong maliit ninyo na steak?” I asked the waitress.

The rib-eye I was told. I had the choice between an Angus rib eye or an Australian rib eye. I wasn’t feeling bongga, I went for Australian.

Deng opted for the pork steak, while Miggy got gambas.

We also ordered fish and chips to share as appetizer.

We got our main course first, though. The appetizer came much later, and with a revision.

“Ma’am, yung fish and chips, fish and fries na lang po kasi naubusan kami ng chips,” the waitress said after several minutes.

Around us, the place was almost full. It’s either the hotel has lots of guests of people have discovered the place.

The beef was tender even if I had it done medium (I didn’t relish seeing pink meat and blood, thank you). Deng’s pork steak tasted just like my rib eye. I mean the basting.

The gambas was more sauté-y than sizzly. But it can pass.

The fish was a cream dory and the French fries were not soggy. Meaning, they’re good. I’m just not a big fan of cream dory.

Over-all, okay. The food is good, the service fast, and the place is not noisy despite the crowd. But it’s not something I’d rave about over and over again. It’s good service and nice food. No raves.

We topped our meal with coffee as we needed to mingle longer for some catching up.

Their paper placemat, by the way reads, Greasy Spoon. We were supposed to ask why, but we forgot.
