JBC releases shortlist for SC Justice Reyes' seat

THE Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has come up with a shortlist of candidates for the post to be vacated by Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Bienvenido Reyes.

SC spokesperson Theodore Te announced Friday that seven out of the 12 applicants seeking to replace Reyes at the SC passed the standards of the JBC, which screens nominees for vacant posts in the judiciary.

Receiving the highest score with seven points is Court of Appeals Presiding Justice Andres Reyes Jr., while CA Associate Justices Rosmari Carandang and Jose Reyes Jr. received six points each.

CA Justices Apolinario Bruselas Jr., Japar Dimaampao and Centro Escolar University law dean Rita Linda Ventura-Jimeno got five points each from the seven-man tribunal.

CA Associate Justice Amy Lazaro Javier received four points.

Under the 1987 Constitution, the President has 90 days from vacancy to select from the shortlist of candidates to be provided by JBC.

Reyes will reach the mandatory retirement age of 70 on July 6. (SunStar Philippines)
