JOHN Hay Management Corporation (JHMC), a subsidiary of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority, actively participated in this year’s Brigada Eskwela which aims to prepare schools for the opening of classes in June.
JHMC pooled together its employees and service providers, the Maximum Security Services Corporation, Baguio’s Finest Security Agency, and Mckleen for volunteers to contribute time, effort and resources to repair, replace and maintain educational facilities and refurbish the school, in general, in order to make it more conducive for learning.
For five days, the JHMC took part in the Brigada Eskwela program of Baguio City High School–Hillside Annex, Camp 7 Elementary School, Jose P. Laurel Elementary School, Happy Hollow Elementary School and San Vicente National High School.
Further, Arabica coffee seedlings were planted at the schools’ ground. In three years, the school will harvest fresh Arabica coffee from their backyard. Aside from being sustainable, coffee plants also help prevent soil erosion.
Clearing and weeding of unwanted shrubs were also made in order to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes causing dengue as well as to tidy up the school surroundings.
Living up with the Cordillera culture, JHMC is also instrumental for the construction of the Happy Hollow Elementary School Eco-Park and their Indigenous Educational Center.
Through its corporate social responsibility programs, JHMC has adopted Brigada Eskwela as one of its annual “Bayanihan” activity.
Despite adversities, JHMC continues to give back and care not only to its stakeholders but also to the educational institutions surrounding the reservation. (PR)
