KABATAAN Party-list Representative Sarah Elago has urged resigned National Youth Commission (NYC) chairperson Ice (formerly Aiza) Seguerra to continue fighting for and with the youth.
On Tuesday, March 13, Seguerra announced that he has already tendered his resignation as NYC chief due to personal reasons.
The resignation will take effect on April 5.
Elago has all praises for the NYC chair, whom she described as someone who listens to the plight of the masses.
"It is not too often that a person used to being listened to and in the spotlight ever so willing to lend an ear to the oppressed and marginalized. More seldom do we come across a person in the bureaucracy who understands and is willing to learn and fight for people's rights," Elago said.
Elago said that while Kabataan Partylist is saddened to learn about Seguerra's resignation, the party-list commends her for almost two years of service to the Filipino youth.
"Ice has learned to listen to the masses and live among them. He has listened to their stories and made songs about these; he has understood their plight, and became an ally and an advocate in the fight for people’s rights and social justice,” Elago said.
"Indeed, we hope that despite his resignation from the NYC, Ice will continue to support the fight alongside the youth and the Filipino people," the youth solon added.
The actor-singer was appointed as NYC chief in August 2016.
Among his advocacies were lowering the number of human immunodeficiency (HIV) cases among the youth.
Although he was part of the Duterte Cabinet, Seguerra opposed the administration's plan to postpone the upcoming Sangguniang Kabataan elections. He also pushed for the resumption of the peace talks between the government and the Communist Party of the Philippines. (SunStar Philippines)
