Kabayan party-list urged: ‘Probe extra legal killings’

KABAYAN partylist Representative Harry Roque is pushing for an investigation of extrajudicial killings in the entire country.

Roque said President Rodrigo Duterte is in the best position to investigate extra legal killings.

“I hope he will discharge his duty to prosecute these killings,” Roque told Baguio-based journalists.

Roque is urging the administration to lead the overhaul of the criminal justice system as well as help improve the judiciary.

“He was a former prosecutor, he is in the best position to do this,” Roque added.

Roque said the investigation of police involved in the illegal drug trade will help in halt in the proliferation of drugs in the country.

The human rights advocate is also calling to look into the relationship between the judiciary and the police to better improve dynamics in a bid to lessen cases dismissed through technicalities adding seminars and training for police on how to handle cases will be necessary.

Roque also dispelled the perception on Senator Leila de Lima being the lone voice in oppositions to human rights violations, saying, “We should separate human rights with de Lima.”

Just recently, Mayor Mauricio Domogan has ordered the local police to investigate sporadic killings, which is ruining the image of the Summer Capital.

Domogan said a team will be formed by the Baguio City Police Office to investigate the deaths in the city which has resulted to the death of 18 individuals, 4 of which were killed during a police operation.

The mayor said the task force assigned to look into the cases will take all factors into consideration in the conduct of their investigation.

With the series of murders, several theories are now floating, bringing speculation and unrest to the residents.

Domogan said there are talks drug dealers are killing each other in the fear of one going to police and surrendering information while police will also be investigated who are involved in the drug trade, recycling illegal drugs seized during official operations.
