THE council of the City of Lapu-Lapu is passing a resolution urging the Mactan Electric Company (Meco) and Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) to remove the surcharge or penalty on the delayed payment of their consumers since March, when the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) started.
Councilor Rico Amores led in creating the resolution during the special meeting of the council on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
Amores shared how he came up with the resolution. He saw the struggles of Oponganons during this crisis since the coronavirus pandemic started.
Apart from that, he’s asking Meco and MCWD to give an extension to consumers to pay their dues until May 27.
According to the resolution, the surcharge from March 27 until May 27 should be removed.
It was on March 29 when the city started its ECQ and targeted to lift it on April 28 or until further notice.
Amores explained that with this resolution, if the ECQ won’t be extended in the city, consumers will have a month to save money to pay their bills as a number of Oponganons have lost their jobs and other sources of income since the ECQ began.
Amores is hoping that MCWD and Meco will approve this request from the council as it is not the consumers’ fault that they lost their source of income due to the pandemic. (GCM / MMC)
