Lapu-Lapu to promote culture, heritage during Gabii sa Kabilin

FOR the first time, heritage sites in Lapu-Lapu City will be featured in the Gabii sa Kabilin (Night of Heritage), an annual tour of museums and historical sites.

City Tourism Officer Hembler Mendoza said participants of the event will be given a tour of the Mactan Shrine and the Nuestra Virgen de la Regla National Shrine on May 31.

The Gabii sa Kabilin is held every last Friday of May to celebrate the country’s National Heritage Month and the International Day of Museums, which fall on May 18.

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. has organized the event since 2007.

New tourism projects

“It’s high time for Lapu-Lapu to join and showcase its heritage sites,” Mendoza said in a press conference yesterday.

The tour will also help the City promote its new tourism projects, particularly the Old Opon Walk Tour and the Olango My Getaway (OMG).

The Old Opon Walk Tour in Barangay Poblacion will feature the Muelle Osmeña, the Nuestra Virgen de la Regla National Shrine and the plaza, among others.

The culinary tour on bike, which is part of the OMG tour, will be replicated in the plaza.

Participants will bike around the plaza and stop at food booths prepared by each barangay in Olango Island.

At the Mactan Shrine, reenactment of the Battle of Mactan and dance presentations will be staged for participants.

Apart from Lapu-Lapu, several museums and heritage sites in the cities of Cebu, Talisay and Mandaue will participate in the Gabii sa Kabilin.

The event, which will start at 6 p.m. and end at midnight, will also feature cultural

shows, exhibits, art fairs, food markets and children’s activities.

In Lapu-Lapu, the tour is prepared by the City Tourism Office and the Lapu-Lapu Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation.

Tickets for the tour can be bought at the office of the Lapu-Lapu SK Federation.

“We encourage the yearly participants of the Gabii sa Kabilin to visit first the heritage sites in Lapu-Lapu so they can see something new, since it’s our first time

to join,” said Nicole Balao, president of the SK Federation.
