Linamon-Kauswagan bridge to undergo maintenance work

LINAMON, Lanao del Norte -- The bailey bridge linking Linamon and Kauswagan towns in Lanao del Norte will be temporarily closed for four hours daily from June 8 to 13 for repair and maintenance, District Engineer Rey Petter Gelli of Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) District II said Tuesday, June 7.

"The  bailey bridge is almost 100 meter in length with a maximum capacity of 20 tons allowable gross tonnage every vehicle to prevent damage and collapse,” Gelli said.

The bailey bridge was constructed and built in two weeks after the old Larapan bridge collapsed at the height of tropical storm Agaton in January 13, 2014.

Thousands of vehicles private and public utility vehicles were stranded on both sides forcing passengers to take pump boats and paddle boats to cross the river.

Engineer Ana Lene Mazano, chief Maintenance Section of DPWH District II, said repairs will focus on the damaged deck slab and the installation of additional components.

Gelli said the construction of the new concrete bridge is under the close supervision of DPWH-Northern Mindanao, not the DPWH District II office.

Commuters and drivers have been complaining that the bridge construction has been long overdue further worsening the build-up of heavy traffic on both ends.
