LOCAL coaches remain optimistic of a better finish in the upcoming Philippine Little League Series following baseball and softball clinics conducted at the Quezon Elementary School open field and Baguio Athletic Bowl on Monday and Tuesday.
The two-day clinic was spearheaded by the Department of Education – Baguio Division and the Angels Baseball Club Foundations.
“We the coaches, especially the athletes are grateful for this activity. We look forward for more occasions like this which gives support to batted ball sports here in our city,” BCNHS coach Alexander Dalog said.
Dalog, together with some 110 other coaches and athletes from the city, are set to participate in the 2014 Philippine Little League Series in Marikina City slated April 20-27.
A total of 120 teams from all over the country will vie for honors in baseball for boys and softball for girls.
"Serving as a grassroots program in the city, we want to reclaim the summer capital's former glory when it comes to batted balls," Dalog added.
DepEd-Baguio supervisor for MAPEH and sports coordinator Fernando Eleponga said the event was hatched to improve the skills and knowledge of both the athletes and coaches from the city.
"The activity serves as a refresher course and at the same time a venue to familiarize the coaches with necessary knowledge and techniques," Eleponga said.
The free sports clinic was conducted by Manila-based coaches Boyet Bernardo and Roger Britanico from the South Ridge School in Muntinlupa
City representing Angels Baseball Club Foundation.
“We admire the talents and interest for batted ball sports shown by the children and coaches here in Baguio City. Given the proper training and support, we believe that we can build potential national athletes from here,” said Bernardo.
According to the facilitators, the foundation has been conducting free batted ball clinics around the Philippines since 2005.
“These free lessons we are giving are actually an outreach program that we conduct to give support to all batted ball enthusiast here in our country, mainly with the advocacy to impart our knowledge with the sport,” Britanico added. (With a report from Alexander Dalog)
