Macala, Salubre rule blitz chess

NATIONAL Master (NM) Macacuna Macala and Jayson Salubre clinched titles at the close of the sixth APM Blitz and Rapid Chess Tournament held at Market Basket in Damosa, Lanang over the weekend.

Macala edged fellow six-pointer Harison Maamo via superior tiebreaks in the seven-round Swiss System Format blitz event. Maamo settled for the runner-up honors while Gino Angelo Asuncion (5.5) placed third.

Macala pocketed P1,000 while Maamo and Asuncion received P500 and P300, respectively.

Salubre, for his part, earned identical six points with Asuncion but the former went on to annex the rapid crown with better tiebreaks.

Salubre claimed P1,500 while Asuncion received P800 and third placer Hareve James Sumatra got P500.

Special awards were also given to Ronnel Alsado (best 2000 rating), Honey Grace Buenafe (best blitz female), Wesley Magbanua (best 12 under in Rapid and Blitz), Engineer Allan Diez (best 2000 below) and Exiquila Apao (best Rapid female).
