Magnitude 5.8 aftershock hits Visayas

A MAGNITUDE 5.8 aftershock rocked Leyte province and other areas in the Visayas Monday morning, July 10.

The strong aftershock, which was first recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at 5.4, came two days after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the same province.

The aftershock struck Ormoc City at 9:41 a.m. Monday with a depth of three kilometers. It was tectonic in origin.

It was felt at Intensity 6 in Ormoc City; Intensity 5 in Kananga, Leyte; Intensity 4 in Mayorga and Tacloban City in Leyte and Mandaue City in Cebu; Intensity 3 in the cities of Cebu and Talisay, as well as in the towns of Loay and Jagna in Bohol; Intensity 2 in Tabogon and Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu, Cadiz City in Negros Occidental, and Iloilo City; and Intensity 1 in Guihulngan, Negros Oriental.

In Talisay City, Mayor Eduardo Gullas had to suspend work at City Hall as a way to ensure the safety of employees.

The City Engineering Office and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, along with the Department of Public Works and Highways, inspected the city hall building for any damage.

Engr. Gamaliel Vicente, acting city engineer, said that as of Monday, the aftershock did not do any damage to the city hall. (JKV/SunStar Cebu)
