Man jumps off ship in Cebu, rescued

CEBU -- A man jumped off a passenger vessel bound for Cebu City early Friday, January 13.

The man, onboard the Lite Shipping vessel from Cagayan de Oro City, jumped from the ship around 5 a.m.

In a text message sent to SunStar Philippines around 5:45 a.m., a passenger Paolo Bago said "Master Captain announcing on comms. Ship crew looking for jumper, waiting for sunlight to help search. Boat hasn't deployed search lights."

Around 5:59 a.m., Bago said passenger vessel Trans Asia 12 joined the search for the man.

Bago said the man was found around 6:05 a.m. by the crew of Trans Asia 12.

"Passenger thrown salvabida. Is swimming back to vessel... Crew jumped in the water to save," Bago said in a text message.

Bago said the man was rescued around 6:49 a.m.

The Lite Shipping vessel arrived at Cebu City port around 8:30 a.m., two hours later than the scheduled arrival.

SunStar Philippines reached out to the management of Lite Shipping for comments, but the shipping company refused to give a statement. (SunStar Philippines)
