Man who hacked cop dies

A MAN believed to be mentally-ill died after he was shot when he attacked a policeman at Purok Mangga, Barangay Igmaya-an, Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental Tuesday, September 26.

The fatality was identified as Danilo Loquiro, 27, of Ilog town.

Senior Inspector Jovito Bose, town police chief, said they received a call for assistance around 8 a.m. from a pastor of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ.

Loquiro has been in the custody of the church for the past four years after he was seen walking on the road. However, recently, he was acting unruly and was even threatening the church members.

He also burned bibles and song charts that prompted the pastor to turn him over to the authorities.

Three police officers responded and tried to talk to Loquiro, who was armed with a cane cutter, but he attacked one of them.

Loquiro hacked Senior Police Officer 2 Alfredo Chavez Jr. on the knees, prompting his two colleagues to fire at the suspect.

Chavez was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City. He will undergo a surgical operation.

Recovered from the scene were three fired bullets of .9 mm caliber pistol.
