Mangrove planting, beach run mark Earth Day in Boracay

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan -- At least 450 mangroves were planted in this world-famed island as part of the observance of Earth Day on Saturday, April 22.

Over 100 volunteers from the local government unit of Malay, barangay officials of Manocmanoc and some locals planted some 450 propagules provided by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Boracay.

The mangrove planting held in Sitio Lugutan aims to raise awareness for the protection of the environment in the island, according to Jonne Adaniel of DENR-Boracay.

Over 600 runners composed of island residents and tourists joined this year’s "SKYathon" Boracay Beach Run to mark Earth Day.

The yearly running event organized by Sky Cable Corporation with this year’s theme “Be a hero for Boracay” is held to raise fund for the environmental programs of Boracay Foundation Incorporated.

Proceeds of the events will be used to purchase reef nurseries for the coral "REEFurbishment" project of BFI.

The project aims to rehabilitate the coral reef ecosystem of the island which is affected by its tourism industry.

Representatives of Sky Cable Corporation and BFI also planted mangroves and conducted clean-up activities in Boracay beaches. (PNA)
