Mansilingan ‘A’ beats Alijis in inter-brgy chessfest

MANSILINGAN Team A edged Alijis via Buchholz points, 22.5-19.5, to win the title in the two-day 1st Inter-barangay Mayor’s Cup Chess Team Championship 2017 1st Leg held at the Bacolod City Government Center lobby.

With Reginald de la Peña on board 1, champion team Mansilingan-A (6/7 points, 22.5 BH) gathered 13 match points after seven rounds to finish on top.

Other champions were Doughlas Perez on Board 2, Joseph Navarra, Board 3, and Clark Ken Pelione, Board 4.

Alijis, the second place, Alijis (6/7 pts, 19.5 BH), also got 13 MP and was anchored by Board 1’s Ernie Abanco and third placer Bata (4/7 pts, 20.5 BH) with 9 MP was led by Josevito Tapulgo on Board 1.

Dominador Bergano Jr., president of Bacolod City Chess Players Association Inc., said they welcome the sports program for the development of young chess players.

“Be in chess as a way of life because illegal drugs can ruin your family," Bergaño added.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia, during the opening ceremony said, “For me, chess is a very unique and a popular sports event. I was endeared to this sport, not because my daughter plays chess, but by blood we are good in chess.”

“So I hope this program will become successful and more young players will develop their skills because natural talent that is not nurtured correctly will not maximize their potential to be the best,” the mayor added.

Rounding up the top 10 finishers are Villamonte (4/7, 18.5), Tangub-A (4/7, 15.5), Mansilingan-B (3/7, 16.0), Estefania-A (4/7, 14.5), Taculing (3/7, 14.5), Barangay 16 (3/7, 13.5), and Banago-A (3/7, 15.0). (HGD)
