Marcial marches on in ASBC Boxing

FILIPINO welterweight Eumir Felix Marcial won his first bout Friday to keep the Philippines' perfect 2-0 slate in the ongoing ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships 2015 at Thanasat 6 University in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Aiba junior world champion Marcial, who also clinched a gold medal in the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore last June, demolished Kyrgyzstan’s Erkinbek Bolotbek Uulu in a unanimous decision victory.

Marcial got the nods of Canadian judge Tony Germain (30-27), Morocco's Bekkay Brahimi (30-26) and Chinese Taipei's Ming Li Liu (30-25) in their 69-kilogram clash.

His triumph followed that of teammate Mario Fernandez who also scored a unanimous decision win over Reza Korzbori in men's bantamweight event Thursday.

In an ASBC report, "The Filipino southpaw boxer was too static in comparison to his previous contests but he was quicker than his Central Asian opponent."

Marcial arranged a Round of 16 bout against Israil Madrimov of Uzbekistan who drew a first round bye in the men's welterweight division.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Charly Coronel Suarez of Davao del Norte was pitted against Kazakhstan's Zakir Safiullin in a men's lightweight match set Saturday evening.

Suarez, a 2014 Incheon Asian Games silver medalist, told Sun.Star Davao that he does not know what to expect of his fight against the Kazakh boxer.

"Wala pa nako na sya makadula gud. Wala pud ko nitan-aw sa iyang laban, sila coach ra. Gipapahulay raman ko nila (I haven't fought him yet. I also didn't watch his fights, only our coaches. They just told me to rest)," Suarez said in a Facebook chat.
