Market body told to review tenants at Libertad Market

BACOLOD City Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran asked the Local Market Committee under the Office of City Administrator John Orola to review the status of tenants at the Libertad Public Market.

Familiaran said he was informed that one of the tenants has been reportedly using the city’s property in illegal drugs activity.

The city’s property should not be used in illegal activities, he added.

“For me, it’s better to close the stall because it is an insult to us. It’s the city’s property,” Familiaran added.

In May, the vice mayor also reminded the concerned officials to inspect the Libertad Annex Building after drug pushers were arrested inside the building.

Jonah Abao, market officer-in-charge, had earlier said that they have recommended to the Local Market Committee to ask for a clearance from the Commission on Audit to open and rehabilitate the building situated in Barangay 40.

The committee is headed by Orola, with City Legal Officer Joselito Bayatan, Councilor Bartolome Orola, and a representative of the vendors as members.

Abao said about 80 percent of the stalls have been abandoned by the occupants and the structure should be opened to accommodate the transient vendors selling on the streets.
