Mendoza: Enriched by experiences, ripened with age

FEELING the pulse of the people you serve, knowing their strengths and weaknesses and looking forward to manifest the success and realization of your mutually agreed plans, projects and innovation towards the end of your term are few of the reasons why a leader should be here and now.

Taking the cue from established leaders, I believe it is a responsibility of a leader to do environmental scanning, to make sure that he knows his people by heart and makes decisions after series of consultations.

It is easier said than done for it needs tedious process, more time to do and setting aside some of your biases. This is not for narrow minded, people with dictatorial tendencies and those who don’t change their minds even if it is needed.

My encounter with various leaders from all sectors over the years makes me realized my own role as a leader. I never regret being assigned to this position at my age now because those years of my stay in the division to regional and division office again since 2003 are more than enough to guide me to do the various roles I am going to play in this new assignment given to me.

The sound advices and the observance of their leadership and management style provide me with first hand information on how to serve my people and serve them well. They are all vital in helping me to become a better leader and a better person at the same time. It will still take a long way to go before I will be able to be the kind of leader who is an epitome of an ideal leader and manager, who can walk his talk and who will make a difference in the lives of the people I serve.

But if a culture has already been established, that will become a short route to traverse and a manifestation of a way of life, not just a phenomenon. This Corner will always be home to various significant happenings and positive changes in the lives of teachers and learners and will always trumpet the latest information needed to be announced to the field.
