Mendoza: The task to learn every day

LEARN new every day.

With the theme, Gurong Pilipino: Kaakbay sa Progreso, all teachers around the country celebrated the World Teachers’ Day (WTD) and culminated the National Teachers’ Month on October 5. This year’s annual celebration was held in Legazpi City, Albay. It highlighted the vital role, hard work, and commitment of teachers in developing globally-competent learners, strengthening communities, and building the nation.

Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones prompted the more or less 6,000 educators who attended the event of the noble work and contribution of teachers to the world. She cited the celebrated mentors of their times namely Marie Curie, Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Gautama Buddha, and Jesus Christ.

Secretary Briones had repeatedly mentioned in the past her profession as a teacher herself, and a product of a family of educators. In her message to the 687,225 teachers all over the Philippines to learn something new every day and become catalysts of change as they inculcate the importance of critical and creative thinking among learners.

Secretary Briones underscored that if the teachers want the learners to learn, they themselves must learn continuously and reminded that if the learners are expected to learn endlessly, the teachers must also learn endlessly.

Like in other celebrations around the country, those who attended the Albay event that became a welcome respite for teachers from their usual daily work participated in cheering competition and Teachers Got Talent. They also watched a concert, enjoyed the raffle prizes and availed of free beauty care and massage from health and wellness boots as well as medical and outreach packages.

All activities done during the event were in pursuant to the Deped Memorandum No. 137, series of 2017, or the National Teachers’ Month and National Teachers’ Day/World Teachers’ Day Celebrations.

A comprehensive report detailing the things done during the whole duration of the National Teachers’ Month shall be submitted on or before October 31.
