Mercado: LPL: The 2nd Mile

MAJORITY of the bigger local business establishments often misunderstand and misappropriate the term "CSR" or corporate social responsibility.

By its sterling performance in Subic and Olongapo City the Laus Group of Companies, especially its non-life insurance arm, the CGIC is cited for its outstanding CSR.

Distressed motor vehicle owners, flood victims of the two communities, have commended the LGC for the readiness, speed, and efficiency in responding to their urgent call for assistance and remediation.

With their vehicles soaked, drowned, and water-logged, the LGC provided quick relief and help to the owners. Showing dedicated care and sustained efforts to retrieve affected cars and SUVs, the Pampanga-based conglomerate mobilized its fleet of maintenance personnel to work full blast in cleaning and restoring the damaged vehicles.

Most important of all, processing the insurance claims of the CGIC-covered vehicles was fast and smooth to enable their quick and full rehabilitation, according to satisfied car owners from Olongapo. The city mayor and other officials were one in expressing collective relief and gratitude to LGC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Levy P. Laus for his highly exceptional CSR practices.

I have known the heartaches and travails of consumers and customers of high end products, including motor vehicles, in Pampanga who were given a hard time by certain companies in their time of need and trouble. The after-sale warranty of service or replacement of defective products is only a promise but not a commitment.

I am singling out Mr. Laus' exemplary achievement in corporate social responsibility as he had demonstrated in Subic-Olongapo. Doing a great deed sans fanfare and drama is second nature to LPL. He always keeps the second mile.

His abiding sense of company responsibility enables Mr. Laus to walk the path of duty. This unravels one secret to his success and that of the LGC. Congratulations to the car dealership titan, von vibant, and business-socio-civic leader!


Angeles City Police Director Eden Ugale has a strong and remarkable concept of leadership. In keeping with his name, maganda rin ang ugali sa trabaho.

u201cIn my every station of assignment I appeal to each and every member of the police force to do the basic things. I ask the policeman to report to his place of duty on time and not to leave it until relieved. I demand that the police officer should be in his assigned place and not elsewhere. I ask that if he is a patrolman, he should be on the beat, if he is on the mobile patrol, he should not found in any duty.”

Supt. Ugale has been cited by Mayor Pamintuan for his achievements in maintaining peace and order in the highly-populated premier city.

Since his assumption of duty in Angeles, I have not heard of complaints on kotong cops or hulidap and police abuses.

During the fiesta and holiday season, Police Chief Ugale faces a daunting and difficult job of ridding the city of undesirable characters, notably the notorious riders-in- tandem and chronic snatchers. Basic to the holidays is the need of policemen to reinforce the city’s traffic group. Let’s field more cops in the streets and public places for visibility, sir Chief.

If he is enterprising and industrious enough, Chief Ugale should initiate body searches on suspect persons in good time joints. He would bag plenty of gun ban violators, particularly those who hid their firearms in their car trunks.
