Michael Pabillore shines in Malaybalay karate tilt

CAGAYAN de Oro City’s Michael Pabillore had his kimono kept in the closet for 10 years after a sudden change of heart from the sport his family name was known for.

But on Sunday, the 32-year-old Pabillore made a successful comeback with a pair of gold and silver medals in the 1st Mayor’s Cup Invitational Karatedo Championship in Malaybalay City.

Pabillore dominated the men’s open kumite, while he fell short and settled for second place in kata division.

With his return, Michael may be the last from the Pabillore family to promote martial arts after the retirement of his internationally-known aunt Marna and cousin Joey.

All of them including Michael were under the tutelage of the now legendary Youth Development through Karate Association of her aunt, Victoria “Kakay” Pabillore.

Michael is determined to follow the footsteps of Marna and Joey in the Philippine Team.

Marna alone was a three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist and a silver medalist in the 2006 Asian games, while Joey was also a gold medal in the biennial games.

Already retired, Marna seeks greener pasture in the US while Joey is currently employed in New Zealand.

“I was really inspired to fight again ug akong gipasalamatan sab ang partner nako nga si Jhoanna,” said Pabillore.

With Kakay already out in the training circle, Michael was grateful with his new sensei (mentor) Gerson Labininay for welcoming him to his gym.
