Militants: Sona rally mood different from last year

MILITANT group Bagong Alyansa Makabayan (Bayan) on Sunday vowed a different mood on their rally during the second State of the Nation Address (Sona) of President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday.

In a statement, Bayan hit the administration for, among others, extending the martial law in Mindanao up to December and for seeking the US' aid in the implementation of said declaration, "in the guise of fighting Isis."

"President Duterte is set to deliver his SONA amid the war in Marawi, extended Martial Law in Mindanao, uncertainty in the peace talks, and with thousands protesting outside Congress," the militant group said.

"The mood be will different from last year's hopeful tone as we have seen how the Duterte regime has unfolded," it added.

Last year's rally as claimed by the group was the "most peaceful Sona rally in history," with all of them having been allowed to converge near Batasang Pambansa, where the Sona was held.

The group, in its statement, further slammed the President for the on and off peace negotiations with the Communist Party of the Philippines.

Duterte recently ordered the cancellation of the backchannel talks with the Reds following its armed wing National People's Army's (NPA) alleged attack against the Presidential Security Group in Arakan, North Cotabato.

"Let Monday's rally be a show of defiance to Duterte, as well as clarion call for genuine, nationalist and progressive change for the Filipino people," Bayan said.

More than 30, 000 rallyist from different parts of the country are expected to stage protest on Monday to decry the administration's failed promises. (SunStar Philippines)
