LIQUOR drinkers and non-drinkers alike were entertained with speed cocktail mixing and flair tending tricks during the Mindanawan Bar Legend 2015, Speed Mixing and Exhibition Flair Competition held at the Activity Center of Centrio on August 18, 2015.
Organized by the Philippine Bartender’s League, CdeO and Northern Mindanao chapter, the goal of the PBL in staging the said competition is showcase the talents of the PBL members.
As Chapter president Alfred Quilario puts it, “We want to uplift and upgrade the skills of the bartenders here in Cagayan de Oro City.” PBL is a member of the International Bartenders’ Association with 52 other member countries.
There were two categories showcased with 10 competitors for speed mixing and six for exhibition flair representing various bars and restaurants not only here in CdeO but all over Mindanao and Visayas.
For speed mixing, each contender had to create four different cocktail drinks in the shortest time possible. The winner for this category, Ruggierro Nicolae Rubio, from Lim Ket Kai Luxe Hotel, was also declared champion the previous year in the same event.
u201cThankful ko na nag remain akong routine. Wala na ko na kuha akong target na time kay four days ra akong practice pero nalipay ko kay na kaya gihapon nko nga mudaog,” he said.
Judging each event were two sets of distinguished people from the field of mixology, wines and spirits, and bar owners, some being previous national and even international winners in various mixing and flair competitions.
Adjudged the best among his peers for the exhibition flair competition is Alfe Balen representing Empire in Lifestyle District.
Like the speed mixing champ who has won two years in a row, Alfe also won last year for exhibition flair making this win his second for Mindanawan Bar Legend. He regaled the crowd with his tricks, juggling bottles, glasses, and mixers, while at the same time creating a cocktail for the judges to taste.
u201cUnexpected ang akong daug because I had no practice at all. I’m very happy to have still won.”
Alfe added, “But I will make sure to practice for Thailand.” The winner for this category will be sent to Thailand this September to participate in an international flair tending competition. A special award was also given to the competitor with the best cocktail drink produced during the exhibition flair competition. The Best in Taste medal was given to bartender Ordandino Ymbong.
Among the crowd are students who would like to learn and get inspired from these seasoned barfolks. Peter Roxas, from Carmen said he watched because he would like to learn. “Plano jud nako i-pursue ang bartending after ko mahuman sa akong course.”
Dalma Petalcorin, 25, a student of Vineyard International Polytechnic College, said, “Dako jud na tabang ang mag participate sa mga ingon ani na events kay related man siya sa akong course. Gusto pod ko makakat-on mag mix ug drinks.”
Hosted by Rfunk with DJ Jag Sundqvist pumping up the throng, the event was a huge success for the organizers.
With drinks and party music blasting from the speakers, the only thing missing were the disco lights.
u201cGanahan jud ko mutan-aw ug ingon ani na competitions kay maka-inspire siya. Na amazed jud ko sa ilang mga talents,” said Ann Albarina of Nazareth. Riain Alfonso
