‘Moonlight’ wins GLAAD Awards

THE Oscar winner Moonlight has won again, taking Best Film at the 28th annual Glaad Media Awards. This time, there was no mistake about it.

Barry Jenkins’ coming-of-age portrait was honored by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (Glaad) at the awards held Saturday in Beverly Hills, California.

The group nominated only two films for the award, which it said reflected the dearth of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) story lines in Hollywood. The other nominee was Star Trek Beyond.

On the TV side, Transparent won Outstanding Comedy Series.

The Best Drama Series went to the fantasy Shadowhunters.

Patricia Arquette was honored with the Vanguard Award and tearfully dedicated the award to her late transgender sister, Alexis Arquette.

u00a0Youth singer Troye Sivan became the youngest winner of the Stephen F. Kolzak award, which is presented to “an LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance.”

“This moment is about visibility and about representation. What and who we see in the media defines our perception of the world around us, and so to see ourselves in this picture of what is ‘normal’ and what is acceptable and what is beautiful is absolutely vital,” Sivan said in his speech.
