MSU-IIT grand slam feat for Steag’s Energy Quiz

“WE ARE doing this every year to enhance the minds of these kids,” said Walter Manos, host during the STEAG Energy Quiz held at Ayala Centrio Mall activity area on December 5, Friday.

By definition, Energy is defined as the ability to do our work, thus the demand of energy is increasing over the years. Energy enables us to use our computers, charge our cellular phones, heat our food, light our houses and streets, powers the vehicles wherever we travel, plays the tune over the radio, cools our drinks in the fridge, and most of all gives us a comfy living.

But, people somehow do not acknowledge the presence of energy that they become unaware of the abuses they commit on it and there the problem arises. As population grows, the living standards elevate together with the increase use of energy. Underscoring this concern is STEAG State Power Incorporated which commits to provide solutions to the expanding energy demands of the country, but preserving mother-earth as well.

STEAG’s power plant operation uses coal for energy generation since it is one of the most affordable and abundant natural fossil fuels. Power is then generated from coal through a series of processes.

All forms of energy have corresponding environmental consequences and coal is not an exemption to that. However, STEAG has not overlooked this trouble because they have well-proven technologies that mitigates coal combustion’s impact to the environment sustaining the track record of zero violation of environmental laws. Furthermore, STEAG uses facilities for pollution prevention that enable a reliable source of energy in Mindanao.

To let the young minds understand the importance of energy efficiency and conservation, STEAG annually conducts Energy Quiz and now on its 10th year participated by 30 secondary schools in northern Mindanao where each school is represented by three delegates per team.

Questions were pertained to electricity and energy relating to natural and physical sciences, chemistry, and physics. Through this, Jerome Soldevilla, STEAG spokesperson believes that these kids will have special interest in the field of energy as well as a public awareness that energy users must care.

MSU-IIT Iligan team bested and hailed victors.

Their coach Ms. Ivy Claire Mordeno shared that they only did the review a week before the competition and never expected to win though it is a pressure to their school winning two straight years and this year is their grand slam feat.

Brandon Apat, Lance Infante, and Vhebs Buhion were thankful that they won despite of the fact that they faced over 29 schools.

“We are already grounded with the topics presented since we tackled it in the classroom that is why we just did reviews and advance readings, of course teamwork is always there,” Buhion said. Apat and Infante also believed that teenagers as they are also have pastimes like gaming, but advised that spending time intelligently is wise for students like them.

Dr. Carsten Evers, STEAG Power Plant Manager, said that they enjoy seeing teenagers answer the questions as they as become well aware how energy works. Evers also said that they are conducting this Energy Quiz every Christmas as they remind everybody that energy managing is very important and “we should make it a habit.”

They also see Cagayan de Oro as potential venue for this kind of square off. (Roshelle Novie L. Cabrido)
