Mutya visits the Queen City

I look at everything as a new adventure

Finding the next Mutya ng Pilipinas is finding the “Filipina with a social conscience” to promote Beauty Tourism not only nationwide but worldwide. That is the message conveyed to everyone as its organizers bring the pageant to the Queen City of the South.

Coming from different places in the country, with some representing the Overseas Filipino communities; thirty beauties vie for the coveted title – Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012.

A Press Presentation of the candidates was held last Thursday, July 19 at the Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort and Spa in Mactan, Cebu. During the event, the girls graciously mingled with guests while eagerly trying to create fine first impressions by flaunting not just their gorgeous bodies and faces, but their good nature and wits, too, especially when questions were thrown for the bravest ones to reply.

It was Kaylee Calaguas who turned out to be the “biggest threat in the competition”, according to her fellow candidates. Well, after she was awarded Ms. Photogenic and Ms. Sheridan Beach Resort and Spa the day before, everyone had all the reasons to keep their eyes on the Fil-Am beauty representing Southern California, USA.

“I don’t know why everyone chose me. I don’t know how to feel. I’m so shocked,” was all Kaylee’s reaction. She went on to say that “If anything, it’s all the girls who have the edge because they speak tagalong, they know the culture, and they know everything. But for me, I look at everything as a new adventure. All throughout the pageant I’m always learning.”

Another candidate unintentionally grabbed attention in the personality of Rizzini Alexis Gomez, representing Cebu. Although she accidentally tripped while going down the stage ala Miriam Quiambao, she gracefully got back on her feet and said “still I have to walk with poise and confidence.”

Many might see her seemingly enjoying a home-court advantage, but Rizzini has a different opinion saying “I don’t expect anything. I just enjoy the chance to represent Cebu with pride and joy.” What she can promise to her Cebuano supporters, though, is that “I’m not going down without doing my best.” Talk about fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude, this girl definitely has it.

Instead of a home-court advantage, she believes her real advantage is “my confidence, my self-esteem and, of course, the sense of responsibility and accountability that I have because I know what you have to do after winning the crown. It doesn’t stop in the coronation night, but it continues on until you pass your crown to another lady in the next year.”

More than making their respective families proud, it is bringing the name of the different places in the Philippines to a higher level of appreciation, thus, promoting Beauty Tourism that makes up the essence of being a Mutya ng Pilipinas.

A Swimsuit Competition was also held at the Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort and Spa yesterday, July 20. The winner will be announced during the grand coronation night happening at the UP Diliman Theater on August 12.
