A WOMAN who was arrested on Tuesday for grave threat and malicious mischief charges gave birth inside the Danao City Police Station yesterday.
Roselyn Ruta, 18, of Barangay Looc, Danao City, delivered a baby boy inside the police station’s comfort room past 9 a.m.
“Wala mi kahibaw nga manganakay na diay siya kay gamay man ug tiyan gud (We were not aware that she was due to deliver her baby because she had a small tummy),” said Insp.
Romeo Caacoy, deputy chief of Danao City Police Station.
PO1 Doniel Capuyan, the jailer on duty, got shocked when he heard the cry of a baby a few minutes after Ruta went out of the detention cell and headed to the comfort to relieve herself.
Capuyan went to the comfort room to check on Ruta and found the mother with her child.
She and the baby were first taken to the Provincial Hospital in Barangay Poblacion, but were later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.
Caacoy said Ruta was caught by virtue of a warrant of arrest for grave threat and malicious mischief.
The arrest warrant was issued by Municipal Trial Court Judge Maria Josefa Ramos of Danao City, he said.
Caacoy said Ruta could have given birth prematurely because the detainee was reportedly only seven months pregnant.
“They (mother and baby) are doing okay,” he told Sun.Star Cebu, adding that they have already committed the detainee to the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology 7.
Caacoy said Ruta did not ask for help from the jailer during her labor.
If only the detainee informed them about her situation, the police could have put her in an isolated cell where she could be monitored.
