A PEASANT leader was shot dead the other night while on his way home in the village of Naje in Arakan, North Cotabato.
The victim, identified as Joel Gulmatico, chair of the militant Arakan Progressive Peasant Organization, was onboard his motorcycle when ambushed by another motorcycle riding gunman.
In a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao on Wednesday, Apo Sandawa Lumadnong Panaghiusa (ASLP) chairperson Norma Capuyan said the victim succumbed to gunshot wounds on different parts of his body.
Capuyan, who was a colleague of the victim, said that Gulmatico was travelling with his wife on their way home before the incident happened.
But the victim's wife had to get off midway to fetch something leaving her husband to travel alone.
According to Capuyan, the incident happened 300 meters away for a military outpost in the area.
The family of Gulmatico, according to Capuyan, said that he was a good man and had no enemies. The victim was a former council member at their barangay.
The victim was said to be actively participating on issues faced by farmers and indigenous people at their place.
