In golf, do you know the difference between Match play and Stroke play? To answer in a simple way, match play is player vs. player (or team vs. team) and they play together in the same flight and the one who gets the better score for the hole wins a point. And usually they play 18 holes, competing hole after hole.

And in stroke play, you fight against everyone in the field and the one who scores the lowest wins.

The reason I asked is because, almost always, the golf competitions, especially big tournaments, are stroke play competitions. Seldom do we apply the match play format.

But, this coming May 10 to 11, 2017, there is going to be an interesting battle between Northern Mindanao and Southern Mindanao. Glenn Yap, proprietor of Chikaan and one of the board members of Apo Golf Club, was kind enough to share with me the details of this competition.

This North vs. South Matchplay tournament is going to be held at Apo Golf & Country Club. The North team is composed of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, and Butuan. And South team is composed of Davao City, General Santos City, Cotabato City, and Marbel. It is a two-day competition. On day 1, team competition, the formats used are—better ball, alternate shot, and scramble. On day 2, it will be individual match play.

This type of competition is similar to The Ryder Cup which is Team USA vs. Team Europe.

According to Mr. Yap, they are still finalizing their team line up. The list of players for Team South include Jing Gavino (Apo Golf), Karloz Alba (Apo Golf), Den de Castro (Apo Golf), Vincent Gumapac (Apo Golf), Leo Fusilero (Apo Golf), Mark Lopez (Palos Verdes), Kuresh Samanodi (Palos Verdes), EJ Casintahan (Palos Verdes), Ninot Galicia (Palos Verdes), Ryan Gotan (Sarangani Golf), and Art Ong, (Sarangani Golf).

The list of players for Team North include Roroy Minoza (Del Monte), Ondoy Mondilla(Del Monte), Meloy Cubillo(Del Monte), Noel Langgamin(Del Monte), Titing Callo(Del Monte), Ben Ramos (Butuan), Rudy Litang (Camp Evangelista), Radzmier G.(Zamboanga), Coby Rolida (Pueblo de Oro), Tony Jueng(Pueblo de Oro), Dong Bin Seo (Pueblo de Oro) and Marlon Santiago (Pueblo de Oro).

Good Luck to both teams!
