Olympian boxer Onyok recuperating in Tagum

OLYMPIAN boxer Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco Jr. is recuperating from an arm operation at the Davao Regional Medical Center in Tagum City and is expected to be discharged Saturday, December 30.

Davao del Norte provincial sports coordinator Giovanni Gulanes bared this in a recent Facebook interview, saying that Velasco succumbed to a bad fall in a basketball exhibition in Abra and when he went to Mawab in Compostela Valley for a separate engagement, he felt severe pain.

"Yup sa Abra pa, then naghubag og na-infected when he went to Ormoc where he was first operated due to infection. Then niadto'g Mawab which worsened his condition (He was injured in Abra that resulted to swelling and infection. He was first operated in Ormoc due to infection. His condition worsened when he went to Mawab)," Gulanes said.

He added that it was fortunate that Velasco, also a coordinator of the Philippine Sports Institute, underwent the needed surgery.

"Maayo nalang kay na-operahan sya kay kung nadugay pa basi putlon na iyang braso (It's good that he underwent operation otherwise his arm might be amputated) due to severe spread of bacterial infection that started from a bad fall in one basketball exhibition game," Gulanes said.

Last Monday, Gulanes visited the Olympic silver medalist anew and was informed that the latter is recuperating fast.

He added, "The wounds have dried up. Onyok said he would most likely be discharged before the New Year."

Onyok, according to Gulanes, will most likely be discharged on Saturday, December 30. His wound was stitched at 10 p.m. Wednesday and he returned to his room after two to three hours of recovery.

"Thank God he is recuperating fast," Gulanes said.
