CLIMBING mountains, survival cooking and map reading—are all these enticing enough?
The Event Hub invites kids and parents to join the One Big Camp. It’s a summer camping event that is truly worth the time.
This is also not a usual summer camp. One Big Camp will teach the young students to appreciate and enjoy outdoor activities. The modules include basic mountaineering suitable for kids and teenagers, introduction to disaster preparedness, first-aid 101, basic rescue training, survival cooking, map reading and communications, and nature art workshops. They will also learn traditional games such as “bato-lata” and “tubig-tubig” and will have an adventure race to culminate the activity.
The organizers, led by Jacqueline S. Siwala, chose to focus on children for this event because they realized that the children are the primary and major victims of any type of disasters. This is a way for them to educate kids to be alert and to learn how to survive in any situation.
The facilitators and volunteer marshals are experienced and professional mountaineers, medical personnel, teachers, and artists. So parents don’t need to worry about the kids’ safety.
The summer camp will be divided into two batches, depending on the age of the children to conduct age-appropriate camping modules. The first batch will be kids from aged 9-16 years old and they are going to spend two nights in the camp. On the other hand, the second batch are kids from 5-8 years old will only spend a one whole day in the camp and be accompanied by parents.
This summer camp will take place in the Gov. Leyson’s Peak in Barangay Taptap on May 9-11, for campers aged 9-16, and May 17 for parents and kids 5-8 years old. (Anna Marie L. Tablada, STC Mass Comm intern)
