Only Ruby can stop them

THEIR game faces are on but Team Cebu City was kept on the edge of their seats as they wait for word on whether the Batang Pinoy National Finals would go on as scheduled on Dec. 9 or be postponed.

Blame Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) for this mess.

The team is set to travel to Bacolod tomorrow for the national finals but the typhoon is also expected to hit the Visayas tonight or tomorrow and it has kept the 243

athletes, coaches and officials of Team Cebu City guessing about their participation.

“We already had several briefings. The kids are all ready but our departure is very uncertain due to the typhoon. The team needs to cross the channel from Toledo to San Carlos City (Negros Occidental). We are not sure yet when the vessels will be allowed to resume operations after the typhoon has passed,” Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Edward Hayco told Sun.Star Cebu.

According to Hayco, there is no news yet from the organizing committee and the Philippine Sports Commission whether the Batang Pinoy National Finals in Bacolod City will be moved.

Team Cebu City was scheduled to leave Cebu tomorrow but the uncertainty of the path of Typhoon Ruby has kept them on the ground.

The CCSC has to adjust its budget for the nationals. They projected to send only 150 athletes to Bacolod City but because of the athletes’ impressive performance during the Visayas eliminations in Kalibo, Aklan last October, they will be sending 224.

Cebu City will be sending athletes in taekwondo, karatedo, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton, basketball, boxing, arnis, swimming, futsal, dancesport, sepak takraw, chess and muay thai, along with wushu, which will be for endorsement.

“I have high hopes for muay thai. I was so relieved that our efforts have been working, especially the Bakbakan sa Sugbo, which was a success at the very beginning,” Hayco added.

Muay Thai athlete Ken Caniga won two gold medals in the Visayas finals, while Sarah Jane Flores won one gold. These got them slots to the national finals.

Caniga and Flores are both products of the “Bakbakan sa Sugbo” program under the tutelage of Yaw-Yan Ardigma founder Master Benigno “Ekin” Caniga Jr. and Kru Robert Serdone of Red Neos Muay Thai club.

The Bakbakan sa Sugbo also features weightlifting, karatedo, boxing and arnis.

These sports made huge contributions in the medal count of Team Cebu City during the Visayas Elimination.
