Oro mayor to sit in university board

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Mayor Oscar Moreno on Thursday, September 8, met with Senator Bam Aquino to iron out an agreement that would make Moreno the official

representative in the Governing Board of the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (Must).

Moreno will represent Aquino, the current chair of the Senate Committee on Education, Culture and Arts, in regular and special board meetings of the State Universities and

Colleges (SUC).

In a letter, Moreno was directed to fulfill the roles and responsibilities of Aquino as a member of the Board of Trustees of the SUC.

The roles included Moreno’s attendance of all board discussions and mandates Moreno to facilitate the engagement of the community in decision-making process of the SUC,

giving paramount importance to the protection of the interests of students, parents, and the development of the community.

Moreno is also expected to promote policies and programs in the school, consistent with Senator Aquino’s education agenda such as free higher education for all, promotion

of student rights and welfare, support for teaching and non-teaching personnel, and school-industry linkages to promote skills and job-matching for better employment

opportunities for graduates.

“As the Senate Committee on Education, Culture and Arts endeavors to provide the needed budgetary support for the SUCs, may we request you to work with the Board in

the full utilization of the financial resources of the SUC for the benefit of our constituents,” the letter said.

Moreno is also reminded to “forego any kind of honorarium, gift, and other forms of compensation while serving in the Board.”

Dr. Ricardo Rotoras, Must president, was also given the letter to inform him of Moreno’s designation.

Moreno, along with City Councilors, attended the National Education Summit at the Philippine International Convention Center Thursday in Manila. (PJ Orias)
