Pacete: Duterte after his 100 days

THE first 100 days of President Digong has been decorated with appeal to surrender for the drug users, drug war for the hard heads, vigilante killings, bombing, exposition of narco lists, involvement of actors in the drug worlds, the De Lima extravaganza, and more.

President Digong has committed himself to be the leader of our country for six years. His 100 days are only droplets in the bucket. We are expecting more mouth shoots from him for his local and international enemies. He could expect for more death threats and economic sanctions.

Let us watch for his moves positively… what he can do more and what he cannot do. Can he fight corruption up to the last man standing? Let us see what is going to happen on the laws like Freedom of Information Act, Anti-Dynasty, and Anti-Political Turncoatism. As early as this, we already see butterflies of varied colors coming in to one flower only.

In the past, public officials were covered by secrecy law (including sex preference). Can President Digong by way of his legislative brigade lift the rule? Is the President having enough time to monitor government officials? Yes, he has to do that to preserve good governance and moral values at all levels.

If his federalism will materialize, he can have his dream of having a right-size government. To level the playing field, President Digong has to institutionalize governance partnership with civil society. Can he show to United States and European Union that he is using the principle of good governance? Can he be transparent, accountable, participative, and predictable? I can’t guess.

Is he up to his knees to amend the Bank Secrecy Law to speed up investigation for possible anomalies among officials? This would make Senator Trillanes happy. Many believe that President Digong champions only the crusade against drugs. He played it sweet by increasing the salary of policemen.

We still want to see a new law modernizing law enforcement agencies. We need to retrain policemen (especially with pot bellies) in better crime fighting strategies. The President promised that there will be modern laboratories in each region (not for shabu manufacturing) to test the alleged confiscated illegal substances.

Our policemen should not be “pulis-patola.” They should have the state-of-the-art crime fighting equipment to outdo and outlive criminals.

Charity begins at home. Regional Philippine National Police commanders should clean up all law enforcement ranks. To make justice credible, we should have organized special criminal courts. We cannot wait to see forever. We want fast results.

The poor are already shouting, “Where are we now? When can we be better?” The task ahead is herculean. President Digong has to create jobs for the poorest of the poor in the countryside through infrastructure projects and the farmers are waiting for free irrigation system. Can President Digong trim down the income tax of those earning below P25,000 every month?

The “Go Negosyo” should support more entrepreneurship programs. There should be the creation of OFW Bank for our modern heroes to encourage them to have personal savings in their own bank. There should be marching order for the Department of Finance to improve collection.

Local government units should be obliged to provide employment and livelihood generation programs. The Department of Social Welfare and Development should create its own program to increase the income of the poor. Don’t just give lip service.

President Digong is just starting. More challenges are yet to come. More works are to be done. The President needs a push from us. There should be more acting than speaking. The country needs more pumping. We want to see the President giving his best pumps. We want all these to happen after his 100 days in office.
