Palace reacts on US show's 'negative' depiction of PH President

MALACAÑANG on Tuesday blasted the apparent negative portrayal of a Philippine President on an episode of American television series “Madam Secretary.”

The upcoming episode, which will be aired on March 12, depicts the fictional Philippine President as “unconventional new president” who “crosses the line” by showing inappropriate behavior toward the female lead character, the US state secretary.

The 20-second teaser of season 3, episode 15 titled “Break in Diplomacy,” showed the fictional Philippine President being punched by the fictional top American diplomat.

Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella shrugged off the character of a Philippine president being portrayed in the show.

He, however, said the American TV show should have instead portrayed a fictional US President because it pictures “their own situation.”

“Well, they engage in something that they would like to [portray but] it’s their business, it’s their craft. You cannot deny them their craft, their taste perhaps,” Abella said.

“I think they are confusing their images. I think they are projecting something that really would like to say about their own situation. Really, I think they should use a fictional US President,” he added.

The episode comes as the international community expresses concerns over the Duterte administration’s bloody campaign against illegal drugs. (SunStar Philippines)
