Peace, Off the Wall

ACCORDING to Banksy, a pseudonymous England-based graffiti artist, political activist, film director, and painter, graffiti is one of the few styles that one can use to express his or her art even if having almost nothing.

Even if you don't come up with a picture to cure the problem of poverty but you can make use of it to make other people smile.

In the case of Color of Peace, the art of graffiti that was once dubbed as vandalism to street walls, took us deeper to the whole meaning of the art of spraying anchored with a sensible activism for peace and unity.

Graffitis are also often used to express underlying social and political messages.

Color of Peace, which took place last Wednesday afternoon at the Freedom Park along Roxas Avenue in Davao City, was attended by at least 60 people of all ages who sprayed their sentiments with a tarpaulin and a yard of plywood as canvass.

Everyone was given the chance to express their feelings through the art of Graffiti, even the mischievous street children who often just play around the area shared their insights of what peace is all about.

The 23-year-old freelance graffiti artist and multimedia student Al Kadir was just one of those who participated in the event.

Kadir created a masterpiece that to an ordinary person's view is a gas mask.

"I don't have any idea what we will create today," Kadir said.

Perplexed with many ideas, Kadir suddenly realized that his concept and ideas about terrorism is the best way to start his masterpiece.

"I want to show to the people my insights that terrorism attacks are not a lone act of the terrorist but there are people who are involved behind these," he added.

It is pretty much clear in my point of view that what Kadir is advocating for is not new at all, and his methods (graffiti) of activism towards peace may limit him, but his mindset overcomes the odds of giving up the fight towards achieving that dream of lasting peace.

Kadir may run out spray paint to use and walls as canvass but his motivation will remain alive.

As millennials, let us consume the resources that are accessible to us to give a cent of contribution in building and achieving peace. Let's not do this for us but we make this happen for the next generation.
