THE University of Cebu’s Aljune Penuti partnered with Jr. Bergantin of Patts Badminton Courts to win the Badminton Fusion 2013 Smash for a Cause held last week in Patts Badminton Courts in Cabancalan, Mandaue City.
The tournament, which was organized by Lyka Productions and Tournament Services of Lyric Roma, saw nearly 100 players coming from as far as Cagayan de Oro City, Manila and Maasin City.
Penuti and Bergantin defeated the tandem of Virgilio Natan of CDO and Kevin Bergantin of Patts Badminton Courts for the men’s doubles open title.
One of the most-watched match was the Mixed Doubles Level F title match, where a tandem from CDO John and Ethyl defeated actress Isabel Granada and Cebuano Marco Aranas.
The other winners included Dexter Opalla and John Ibo of UC, who won the men’s doubles Level D title over Christian Santorio and Ben Tan of CDO; Jimboy Caballero and John Lyle Cuerpo, who defeated Aranas and Magnus Catelo for the Men’s Doubles Level E title; and Richard and Francis Alpuno from Naga City, Cebu, who won the men’s doubles Level F title against Jack Rojas and Andres Cerro of Maasin City.
The women’s doubles Level CD title was won by Jessa Mae Lagat of UC and Cham Montilla of USC. They defeated Trisha Uy of UC and Emily Judilla of SWU in the finals.
The other women’s doubles winners were Hazel Libato and Joan Francisco of Lapu-Lapu City winning the Level E title after beating Kathlyn Socorro and Anne Villegas of Naga City-Cebu; and Liliberth Stinger and Shiela Panibon of CDO taking home the Level F title after besting Talisay City’s May Arias and Cherry Tan in the finals.
The mixed doubles winners were Christian Santorio and Hazel Libato who defeated Jr. Bergantin of Patts and Trisha Uy of USC for the CD Level title; and Jimboy Caballero and Lilibert Stinger winning the Level E title after beating fellow CDO team Jan Lyle Cuerpo and Sheila Panibon.
